Student Presence at Teachers’ Rally – 12/15/18 8:45AM Grand Park
We know students are tired. We’re so close to the end of the semester and tons of sleep is imminent after finals, but showing up to the teachers’ march this coming Saturday 10AM at Grand Park is crucial. Teachers will probably be striking soon but in general this is a rally on the nature of privatization and education.
Students have the potential to really bridge the gap with educators, establish our own demands, mobilize, and build solidarity. CASM will be at the rally handing out materials. We are also close to finalizing our set of demands and potentially sharing them at the rally. If you are interested in being a part of a student contingent or just to make a university student presence, reach out to us or meet us at Grand Park. We will be by the main fountain at 8:45AM creating posters. Also, we will have a CASM meeting sometime after the rally to reflect on our first semester getting started as an organization, discuss where to go from here, and how to begin recruiting more people the semester ahead. With that in mind we will be hosting a social soon for new people who are interested in CASM. More to come!
Today – 10/23/2018 – Call to Action
The founder of the far right wing organization Turning Point, Charlie Kirk, and their Communication Director, Candace Owens, are doing a speaking tour at CSULB. This is an outrage to allow a neo-conservative fascist on a campus that claims “diversity” and a “safe campus community”. We must gather in solidarity to let the right wing fascists know we will not tolerate them on our campus. The presence of this group on campus threatens the security of people of color, queer folks, immigrants, and people from different religious backgrounds. The message of Turning Point and Charlie Kirk is racist, misogynistic, anti-LGBTQ, anti-Muslim, and xenophobic masked under the principles of free speech. This organization claims the right of free speech but only as a method to preserve capitalist, white supremacist, and patriarchal systems. This is a call for action. We must not allow TPUSA to hold space at CSULB and we must speak out against their hate tactics. Join us in resisting white supremacy and defending our campus community.
The Feminist Wave & The Stuggle to Legalize Abortion In Latin America
Over the last decade, there has been a growing movement in Latin America calling for the legalization of abortion and that #NiUnaMenos (Not one [woman] less) will die from gendered violence. The feminist wave has coalesced with broader social movements resisting neoliberalism and expanding labor rights, immigrant rights, and the fight for free university education. This talk will highlight the main experiences from these struggles and discuss how we can develop a feminist movement with transversal and multisectoral politics that resists capitalism and patriarchy. Key note speaker Dr. Romina Akemi Rioja of Black Rose Anarchist Federation.
